In March 2010 Royce Group Ltd was awarded the contract to supply and install the mechanical services installation for the refurbishment of Victoria Coach Station, Buckingham Palace Rd, London.

The contract consisted of the refurbishment of the fresh air supply and extract systems feeding the ticket hall, along with new inverter is driven controls and monitoring systems.

A Daikin VRV Heat recovery system was installed to provide heating and cooling to the public and staff areas of the ticket hall. The system was rated at 150 kW of cooling and consisted of a mixture of ducted and 1-way blow cassette units. 2 biddle door curtains were also installed at the entrance to the ticket hall.

New plumbing services were also installed, and the WC areas refurbished with new sanitary ware, brassware and extract systems.

The work was completed on time with the added benefit of the VRV system being handed over to the client several weeks earlier than required. This eased the considerable discomfort the staff had to contend with, working in front of South facing windows without the benefit of air conditioning.

In March 2010 Royce Group Ltd secured the contract to provide VRF air conditioning to the refurbished CAB in Cambridge.

The Project consisted of the installation of 2 Mitsubishi VRF systems to serve both the client and staff areas.

Heating and cooling were provided by ceiling cassette systems suspended within the ceiling grid.

External heat pump condensing units were installed on a purpose made plant deck to the rear of the ground floor roof.

System controls were via touch screen AG150 controllers, installed in the ground floor storage area. CAB Cambridge

The project was completed on time and on budget.

In June 2010, Royce Group were awarded the contract to install mechanical services in the new Jimmys Night Shelter in East Rd, Cambridge.

The M and E consultant was David Bedwell and partners, and the main contractor was Hutton Construction Ltd.

The contract involved new ductwork and ventilation equipment, including a smoke damper control system. New gas supplies, boilers and hot and cold water services were installed in a purpose designed facility in the basement of the Zion Baptist Church, in East Rd, Cambridge.

This installation was particularly challenging due to the nature of the building, being a low ceilinged basement. Many enforced alterations were required before the services installation was ready for use. These included chopping up the existing kitchen equipment and sinks to allow them to fit in the kitchen, plus the installation of 3 different kitchen extract canopies before the system would work!

The new Jimmys night shelter opened in November 2011 and is already in full use constantly, provided much needed sheltered accommodation for homeless people in Cambridge.

Royce Group are proud to be associated with this project and continue to be involved with Jimmys Night Shelter to this day.

In January 2011, Royce Group were awarded the contract to update the mechanical and electrical services at the former Mercedes Benz Performance Engines (MBPE) site in Brixworth, Northants.

This site is formerly the engine development site for the Formula 1 race engines used by Lewis Hamilton on his way to the world championship in 2008. The restaurant used for the victory party is one of the buildings to be refurbished as part of these works. The site is hugely interesting for anyone interested in Formula 1 or any form of motorsport. Another tenant on site are Ilmor Ltd, who make race engines for Moto GP bikes, NASCAR racers and even racing aeroplanes.

Initially, the works comprised the installation of gas, water and electricity meters in all individual buildings on site, 8 in all, for the new landlord and developer, Development Securities Ltd.

Once on site, the works have expanded to include the servicing and recommissioning of the mechanical and electrical services on all of the site buildings.

Several buildings were installed with obsolete and redundant R22 air conditioning equipment. This equipment, including some of the earliest VRF systems, is to be changed using the latest ‘replace technology’ equipment. This process involves replacing the existing indoor and outdoor units with modern equivalents, using environmentally friendly refrigerants and inverter driven compressors.

This work is ongoing at this time and this page will be updated frequently.

Update – June 2011

Unit 2 has now been completed and has been occupied by its new tenant. A new Mitsubishi VRF system has been installed and all of the redundant R22 AC systems removed and recycled.

The next phase of the site is possibly the conversion of Unit 9, known as the Pyramid, into a car showroom for customised Porsches! The Pyramid is the building where Lewis Hamilton had his party after winning the 2008 F1 world championship and was used as the on-site restaurant at the Mercedes F1 facility.

The conversion is likely to involve the removal of a large redundant chiller and its replacement with an efficient heat recovery VRF system.
